Lattices are most commonly associated with traditional country gardens, but they can be charming interior decor as well. With a classic whitewash finish and a diamond-shape pattern, lattices can bring a touch of the country to the smallest urban apartment; with a less traditional paint job and a more ornate shape, they can suit a shabby-chic or eclectic design scheme.
Hang It Up
Fasten a wooden lattice to the wall with nails or drywall screws to give the wall some architectural detail. Paint the lattice the same color as the wall for a subtle effect, or paint it a different shade within the same color family to make it more visible. In a modern, funky home, paint it a contrasting color or faux-finish it with a stainless steel paint. Cover just a small section of wall, such as between two large pieces of furniture, or cover the entire wall to create a sort of three-dimensional wallpaper.
Dress It Up
The lattice itself doesn't have to be the only decoration element on that stretch of wall. String fairy lights through it to mimic a delicate evening garden; wrap it in strands of beads to create a colorful piece of art; glue photographs to the back side of the wood so the pictures peak through the gaps like frames. Use a small lattice as a hanger for necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Hang a wide lattice in front of a mirrored wall to create a French window effect. The empty space between the wooden slats can turn the wall into a display.
Paint It On
Instead of fastening an actual lattice to the wall, paint on a lattice-work shape. Depending on the design, the effect can be vintage or contemporary. For a shabby-chic wall, make or buy a lattice stencil with curves and embellishments, tape it to the wall and paint the shape on in a shimmery color. The wall color fills in the negative space. For a more modern effect, paint the wall in the color you plan for the lattice slats, then cross-hatch the wall geometrically with painter's tape. Spray paint the surface with a new color for the background, and peel off the tape to reveal the lattice design.
Sneak It In
Rather than using the lattice purely as decoration, incorporate it into a piece of furniture or a functional household item. Use a piece of lattice as a headboard, or glue pieces into the recessed walls of open-faced cabinets or bookshelves. Screw hooks into a lattice, some near the top and some lower down, and install it by the front door as a coat hanger every member of the family can reach -- or install it in the kitchen and hang teacups from the hooks. Just be sure you attach the lattice to wall studs if you plan to hang anything heavy from it.
